Promotion and Tenure Policy

The following policies govern the implementation of the University of West Alabama Promotion and Tenure process within the Julia Tutwiler Library.

TERMINAL DEGREE

The 1995 standards of the Association of Colleges and Research Libraries state that "the MLS is regarded as a terminal professional degree by ALA and ACRL." This degree will, therefore, be the appropriate terminal degree through the rank of Associate Professor.  To achieve the rank of Professor, one must hold the Doctor of Philosophy, the Doctor of Library Science, or the Doctor of Education in library science, learning resources, educational technology, or a field that meets SACS accreditation standards.

DEMONSTRATED ACHIEVEMENT CRITERIA

I.   Librarianship and Teaching, Effectiveness
  1. Command of the knowledge essential for present position; awareness of current practices, developments, research, and technology, in assigned area/s of responsibility.
  2. Ability to plan, organize, and conduct bibliographic instruction in the use of the Library and its resources.
  3. Ability to provide effective reference and research assistance to University faculty and students.
  4. Ability to provide effective bibliographic organization and control over library collections.
  5. Ability to conduct collection assessment activity and collection development projects.
  6. Ability to perform assigned duties and responsibilities with accuracy, thoroughness, consistency, and competence.
  7. Ability to produce an acceptable volume of work with speed and consistency of output.
  8. Ability to interact congenially with library personnel, faculty, and students.
  9. Ability to work independently and decisively.
  10. Ability to adjust to and support change in work situations.
  11. Willingness to cooperate in working for the good of the whole Library.
  12. Leadership and good management in planning and implementing library services, operations, and budgets.
  13. Awareness of current practices, trends and technology through professional development and continuing education activities.
  14. Ability to communicate well in oral and written form.
Assessment

In order to qualify for a promotion in rank, a faculty member is expected to maintain a consistently high level of performance in librarianship and in teaching assignments (bibliographic instruction) appropriate to the rank in question.  Performance will be assessed through the annual evaluation instrument; the attached supplementary instrument; evidence that the faculty member has accomplished library goals and objectives for which he/she is responsible, such as those listed on the Key Effectiveness Yardsticks for the Library; peer review; faculty and/or student comments which the Director may request; and student evaluations of bibliographic instruction.II.   Scholarly/Creative Activity

  1. Research related to teaching or professional duties and assignments.
  1. Research aimed at improving bibliographic instruction or other functions of Library operations.
  2. The design and production of instructional materials on the use of the Library and its resources.
  3. The development of innovative approaches to problem solving in specific areas of librarianship which will further enhance professional techniques and services.
  1. Publications, Papers, Presentations
Academic research leading to publications, papers, or presentations.
  1. Other Research
  1. Research addressing a University service area concern.
  2. Research addressing a University issue.
  3. Research related to participation in professional organizations or programs.
  4. Research required for preparing grant applications.
Assessment

Scholarly/creative activities are assessed through the Faculty Portfolio, which contains documentation in the form of proposals; significant bibliographies, indexes, special catalogs, guide books, access guides, inventories, calendars, etc., of Library resources; outlines or drafts of current research; copies of publications or papers; official programs; news accounts; or any other data that will help to determine the nature and quality of the faculty member's scholarly and creative efforts.

Promotion in rank requires evidence of achievement as follows:

 

Assistant Professor Research related to teaching, or professional duties and assignments.
Associate Professor The MLS candidate for an associate professorship must have completed 10 years of service at UWA in order to be considered for promotion to that rank, and then meet the criteria outlined for promotion to an associate professor.Research related to teaching or professional duties and assignments and one or more of the following:

Publications, papers, presentations;

Research addressing a University service area concern;

Research addressing a University issue;

Research related to participation in professional organizations or programs; and

Research required for preparing grant applications.

 

Professor Research related to teaching or professional duties and assignments AND TWO or more of the following:

Publications, papers, presentations;

Research addressing a University service area concern;

Research addressing a University issue;

Research related to participation in professional organizations or programs, and

Research required for preparing applications.

 

III.   Leadership/Service

A.   University Service

1.  Institutional Service

Includes grant writing, service on Faculty Senate committees and Library and University committees;  service as a Faculty Senate representative or officer; and institutional representative to local, regional, and/or state agencies, such as the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries.

2.  Professional Affiliation and Service

Includes membership and active participation (attending meetings, holding office, presenting programs, etc.) in appropriate professional organizations; active participation in area or state workshops and conferences.

B.    Public Service

Includes active participation in or presentations to appropriate community groups and organizations.

C.   Leadership

Includes leadership positions in professional organizations, chair of library and/ or university committees, coordinator of workshops and conferences, and advisor to student organizations.

Assessment

Leadership/Service assessed through the Faculty Portfolio which contains documentation in the form of letters of appointment to positions in professional organizations, letters of appreciation for public service, outlines of workshops and conferences presented, or other evidence.  Promotion in rank requires evidence of achievement as follows:

Assistant Professor          One or more of the above areas.

Associate Professor          Two or more of the above areas.

Professor                          Three or more of the above areas.

 

CRITERIA FOR TENURE

In addition to serving the required number of probationary years (as specified in The University of West Alabama promotion and Tenure Process statement, library faculty approved for tenure shall, at a minimum, meet the following requirements:

1.    They shall possess the academic credentials necessary for promotion in rank.

2.    They shall have demonstrated a commitment to professional development by having met the minimal criteria in the categories of teaching, scholarly/creative activities, and leadership/service required for promotion to the next rank.

3.    They shall perform an essential role in carrying out the Library’s current mission, goals, and objectives.
