SATISFACTORY PROGRESS FOR
NCAA STUDENT-ATHLETES

What academic requirements apply to eligibility for competition? After their first year of residence (or term of residence for a midyear transfer student) or their first season of competition, student-athletes who wish to compete must meet the following eligibility requirement based on their academic record at the start of the fall term. The student-athletes must:

Be enrolled in NOT LESS than 12 semester hours AND HAVE 1)Satisfactorily completed a total number of academic credit hours equal to an average of at least 12 credit hours per term for each term enrolled, OR 2) Satisfactorily completed 24 semester hours since the beginning of the previous fall term.


(NOTE: Credits used in determining student-athletes’ eligibility for competition must be credits, required or electives, that would count toward their degree programs, which must be declared by their fifth semester or the beginning of their third year.)

No more than twenty-five (25%) percent of their credit hours can be earned during the summer. (i.e.---No more than six hours, 25% of 24 needed).


What additional academic standards must student-athletes meet for satisfactory-progress requirements?

  • After completing their first season of competition, they must have at least an overall 1.60 grade point average;
  • After completing their second season of competition, they must have at least an overall 1.80 grade point average; and
  • After completing their third season of competition, they must have at least an overall 2.00 grade point average.

Other courses that my be used to fulfill requirements for satisfactory progress:

Summer Courses at Other Institutions: Must have prior approval by an appropriate academic official.

Remedial, Tutorial or Noncredit Courses
: May be used to satisfy minimum requirements only if they meet ALL of the following conditions 1) The courses must be considered by UWA to be prerequisites for specific courses acceptable for any degree program; 2) The courses must be given the same weight as others here in determining the student’s status for full-time enrollment; 3) Noncredit courses may not exceed the maximum institutional limit for such courses in any baccalaureate program or the student’s specific degree program once a program has been designated; AND 4) The credit in such courses shall not exceed 12 semester hours and the courses MUST be taken during the student-athletes first academic year of collegiate enrollment.

Incomplete Grades
: A student who receives an incomplete grade in a course may utilize the course in question to fulfill the minimum satisfactory-progress requirements, subject to ALL of the following conditions 1) The incomplete grade must have been removed in accordance with UWA’s regulations applicable to all students; 2) Such a course may be counted only once after a grade has been achieved that is acceptable to UWA for determining satisfactory progress; AND 3) The course with the acceptable grade shall be counted either during the term in which the student initially enrolled in the course or during the term in which the incomplete grade was removed and acceptable credit was awarded.

Repeated Courses
: Credit for courses that are repeated may be used by a student to satisfy the minimum academic progress requirements ONLY under the following conditions 1) A course repeated due to an unsatisfactory initial grade may be utilized only once and only after it has been satisfactorily completed; 2) Credit for a course that may be taken several times (e.g., a physical education activities course) shall be limited to UWA regulations; AND 3) Credits earned in courses that may be taken several times may not exceed the UWA limit for credits of that type for any baccalaureate degree program (or the student-athletes’ specific baccalaureate degree program once a program has been designated.)
